Top 10 Tips for Student Pilots to Stay Cool and Comfortable While Flying This Summer

Stay cool this summer

As summer temperatures rise, staying cool and comfortable in the cockpit becomes essential for student pilots. Hot weather can be challenging, but with the right preparation and gear, you can keep your focus on flying. Here are our top 10 tips to help you beat the heat and enjoy a smooth, comfortable flight this summer. These same tips also apply to attending airshows, so keep them in mind whether you're flying or spectating!

  1. Wear Moisture-Wicking Clothing Choosing the right apparel can make a significant difference in your comfort level. Opt for moisture-wicking shirts designed to keep you cool and dry by drawing sweat away from your skin. These shirts are made from high-quality, breathable materials that help regulate your body temperature.

  2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate Dehydration can impair your cognitive function and reaction time, which are crucial when flying. Always carry a water bottle with you and drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight. Avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks, as they can contribute to dehydration.

  3. Plan Your Flights During Cooler Times of the Day If possible, schedule your training flights in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower. This not only helps you stay cool but also provides smoother air conditions, making your training experience more enjoyable.

  4. Use Sun Protection The cockpit can turn into a greenhouse on sunny days, so it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Wear a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen with a high SPF to exposed skin. Choose apparel that also offers UV protection to shield you from the sun.

  5. Stay Cool on the Ground Before takeoff, keep yourself cool by staying in shaded areas or air-conditioned spaces. Use portable fans or cooling towels to reduce your body temperature while you’re on the ground.

  6. Manage Cabin Temperature Make sure your aircraft’s ventilation system is working correctly and use it to your advantage. Open vents and windows (when safe) to allow airflow and keep the cabin temperature down. If your aircraft is equipped with air conditioning, use it to stay cool during your flight.

  7. Dress in Layers Weather conditions can change quickly, so dressing in layers allows you to adjust your clothing as needed. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, and add lightweight outer layers that you can remove if you get too warm.

  8. Stay Light Heavy meals can make you feel sluggish and uncomfortable in the heat. Opt for light, nutritious snacks and meals before your flight to maintain your energy levels without feeling weighed down.

  9. Take Breaks If you’re flying for an extended period, plan breaks to step out of the cockpit, stretch, and cool down. Short breaks can help prevent overheating and keep you alert and focused.

  10. Know the Signs of Heat Stress Be aware of the symptoms of heat stress, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, and excessive sweating. If you start to feel any of these symptoms, take immediate action to cool down, hydrate, and seek medical attention if necessary.

Flying in the summer or attending an airshow can be a rewarding experience if you take the necessary precautions to stay cool and comfortable.
